Scabies is a highly dangerous contagious infection of the skin caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, a microscopic parasitic mite.

The mites basically burrow under the skin, live on the blood, lay eggs, and produce toxins to cause an intense itchy rash, a scabies symptom.

Intense itching is the first and the most common symptom of scabies that usually starts appearing within the first few days after the mite attacks. It begins as a slight rash and itching.

However, the itching becomes more intense and worse especially at night and over most of the body parts.

Initially, the symptom appears as a streak of small blisters or red bumps. The skin may become hard or scaly in most severe conditions.

Scabies is a very common skin infection around the world that everybody acquires it. It is found that over 300 million people are acquiring scabies worldwide, every year. Transmission of scabies is most possible with close and prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.

The physical skin-to-skin contact [Skin to skin contact causes Scabies] where the mites can pass is, of course, sexual contacts.

Remember that scabies is very common among young people who are sexually active. It is hard to get scabies through sharing towel, clothing, bed and the things of a person who has scabies.

The amount of time it takes to develop scabies symptoms depends on the infected person. For a newly infected person, normally, it takes two to six weeks to develop the symptoms.

On the other hand, person who have had scabies previously and re-exposed can develop symptoms within one to four days.

The scabies rashes usually occur due to the allergic reactions caused by the toxins that the parasitic mites produced in the skin.

In adults, the symptom first appears in body folds, mainly between the fingers, on the elbows, the buttocks, near the nipples. However, in children, it can affect the complete body, including the head, the scalp, the palms, and the soles of the feet.

The other symptoms of scabies include a scabies burrow on the surface of the skin. It is a common scabies symptom that can appear on the entire body: the neck, back, buttock, ankles, chest, elbows, stomach and pubic region.

Nodules are also an indicative scabies symptom. This symptom is generally very painful and can continue to exist even after the scabies is exterminated.

Acropustulosis is one more scabies symptom that mostly occurs in children. The symptom usually appears as tiny blisters and pustules on the skin and can cause severe discomfort and soreness.

Even though, this skin infection can be treated easily, it is very essential to pay attention to the scabies symptoms all the time, as the symptoms of scabies can sometimes misleading to other skin disorders and cannot create a proper diagnosis.

Remember that the scabies mites and the scabies symptoms can be exposed only by careful assessment of the body.

Noticing scabies symptoms at early stages and confirming the presence of scabies mites in the skin can help deal with the condition easily through an appropriate scabies treatment.

Good news for all the scabies victims is that scabies can be treated very well.

Many products have come into the market promising to treat scabies at their best.

Condition is that all these products should be used keeping in mind their effect, side affects if any and of course the procedure of application.

Now let’s have a brief discussion on scabies treatment!

Many scabies treatment products like lotions are available for common people at very effordable prices. Be very careful and always follow the directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert.

The method of application of each product may differ sometime, but the most common procedure and suggestion would be apply lotion to a clean body from the neck down to the toes and left overnight (8 hours). After 8 hours, take a bath or shower to wash off the lotion.

Pregnant women and children are often treated with milder scabies medications. All the patients should put on clean clothes. All clothes, bedding, and towels used by the infested person 2 days before treatment should be washed in hot water; dry in a hot dryer. A second treatment of the body with the same lotion may be necessary 7-10 days later.

Important! People who have scabies obviously should be treated for the disorder but along with them people moving around them close to them, sexual partners and persons who have a prolonged contact to the infested person should also be treated. Don’t neglect the health of your family members if they are also suggested to be treated by your doctor.

The scabies treatment shows its effect slowly, it is not possible to stop itching all of a sudden but definitely it can be slowed down gradually. If needed your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to relieve itching if it is severe. Remember and Watch Out! No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after effective treatment.

Treatments can be categorized as topical “pesticide” applications, systemic “tablet” doses. These scabies treatments proved to have the advantage of ensured total coverage. As the studies reveal the least toxic treatment is 10% sulfur ointment, a cost-effective treatment with the least long-term side-effects.

Because it is safe for all age groups the topical medication of choice is 5% permethrin, it should be applied for eight to twelve hours (overnight is the most convenient) then washed off.

As it is known that topical or surface medications are often effective and must be applied thoroughly to all skin from the face down, especially to areas known to be primarily affected (skin folds, etc.).

Historical scabies treatments are Lindane (hexachlorocyclohexane) creams or lotions which should be avoided because they have been shown to have neurotoxic effects in children and infants. Similarly, 5–10% sulfur ointments are considered historical.

In order to reduce or control the itching doctor may also prescribe some medications. So hope you had good information on the scabies treatments available for scabies. Take Care!

Here is some really good information on scabies.

All the information you wanted to know on scabies like its occurrence, its symptoms and prevention tips in just few seconds of reading. Start reading now!

Know It’s Cause! Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. People of all races and social classes all over the world are infected by this.

It is evident from above that scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.

Yes, this really spreads very quickly from person to person just on a simple touch.

Irrespective of age, sex, race or standards of personal hygiene scabies infestations can affect people from all socioeconomic levels. Outcomes of this disorder are occasionally seen in nursing homes, institutions and child care centers.

This is for your information that these mites are transferred also by indirect transfer from undergarments or bedclothes if these have been contaminated by infected people immediately beforehand. You’ll be surprised to know that scabies can also be transmitted during sexual contact.

Intense itching particularly at night is the most prominent symptom of scabies. The areas of the skin most affected by scabies include the webs and sides of the fingers, around the wrists, thighs, genitalia, nipples, breasts, lower buttocks, elbows ,armpits and waist.

People who have had a previous bout with these mites may show symptoms within one to four days after subsequent re-exposures. Symptoms will appear from two to six weeks in people who have not previously been exposed to scabies infestations. A person is able to spread this disorder until mites and eggs are destroyed by treatment.

Relax! Scabies can be pretty well prevented in best possible ways.

When an outbreak is reported be alert for symptoms in member of your family.

If your child has scabies, please notify the school authorities so the school will be alerted to check for any outbreak.

Regularly change and wash all clothing, bedding, towels and under wear.

When laundering towels, clothing and bedding use hot water and enzymes or borax.

Children should not share clothing or other personal articles such as hair brushes, combs or towels with one another.

Try routinely using a sauna – try bathing, soaking or washing in diluted Safe Solution’s Enzyme Cleaner enzyme cleaners and/or borax and/or sulfur.

Watch Out! Yes, scabies has a very high possibility of reinfestation. So be very careful and alert and watch out for symptoms regularly. Follow the above measures as best as possible as these avoid reinfestation. Keep in mind that the medicated (poison) lotion treatment for scabies does not provide long-term protection and reinfestation is always possible.
