Correlation between Post Nasal Drip and Bad Breath

Bacterium is present in the back of the tongue and throat. Mucus is produced in sinusitis, allergy attack or rhinitis and this mucus produced trickles down the throat bathing the anaerobic bacteria in it. These bacteria feed on the protein present in the mucus and emit the bad odour. Added to this if you have tonsil, then an increased number of these anaerobic bacteria would be present in the crevices of the tonsils. With the passage of time, post nasal drip is trapped in these crevices. The accumulated mucus from the post nasal drip mixes with the sulphur producing bacteria, residing in the crevices of the tonsils, then tonsil stones are formed that emit foul odour.

Ways to Treat Bad Breath or Halitosis Caused By Post Nasal Drip:

  • Medication:

Medicines, such as antihistamines are used to prevent the build up of mucus by drying up the sinuses. Care should be taken to safeguard against drying up of the mouth, which is a common side effect of the antihistamine drug. Dry mouth contributes to bad breath by creating an aerobic environment perfect for the sulphur producing bacteria to thrive.

  • Breath Nasal Sinus Drops:

With the help of 3-4 sinus nasal drops in each nostril, you can experience fresh taste and breathe it as it helps to get rid of the sulphur compounds produced by the reaction of anaerobic bacteria with mucus.

  • The Hydropulse:

This is an irrigator for nasal sinus treatment. It helps to effectively control post nasal drip and sinus infections. This irrigator is registered by FDA and it enables to restore the ciliary’s function and relieve the post nasal drip. If this drip is used regularly, then within a brief period of time it can stimulate the cilia to carry out the natural functions of cleansing and sweeping. You can get better result by adding 2-3 drops of ActivOxigen serum into the trough before use.

If you feel that your nasal drainage is emitting a foul odour and you are suffering from fever, cough or ear infection, visit a doctor immediately. These are the probable symptom of PND. If medicines are not working to cure postnasal drip, you have to visit an otolaryngologist for treatment and evaluation.
