However, not everyone is comfortable applying sunscreen solutions that contain chemicals to the skin on a regular basis.

If you want to protect your skin from overexposure to the sun while avoiding the chemicals commercial sunscreen solutions contain, consider the following recipes.

Natural Sunscreens May Not Be Natural

While there are a number of so-called natural sunscreen products on the market today, not all of them are chemical free.

Most of the products that claim to contain no chemicals or harmful ingredients actually contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients have recently been linked to damage of the skin caused by free radicals.

Some people believe free radicals can lead to skin cancer or other serious conditions of the skin. It is very difficult to find commercial products that do not contain these ingredients today.

Natural Sunscreen Options

You may be able to find homemade natural sunscreen in your area. However, most people will have to resort to making their own. Most homemade sunscreen ingredients can be purchased at natural or health stores.

However, you can also order most ingredients online today as well. You will want to make sure that the products you are purchasing are cosmetic grade or 100% natural, as some suppliers may offer a blended ingredient at a lower price.

Natural Sunscreen Recipe

If you are in search of a natural sunscreen recipe consider the following. This recipe will provide an effective sun block that can prevent sun burn. At the same time many of the ingredients are very effective at blocking the UV rays from the sun.

Ingredients: (makes enough sunscreen for one person/one application)

½ a Tablespoon of Avocado Oil

1 ½ Tablespoons of Grated Beeswax

1 ½ Tablespoons of Shea Butter

½ Tablespoon of Sesame Oil

½ Tablespoon of Coconut Oil

1 ½ Tablespoon of Aloe Vera Gel

½ Tablespoon of Canola Oil

¼ Teaspoon of borax powder*

1 ½ Tablespoon of Lavender Hydrosol

½ of a Vitamin E Gel Caplet

**All ingredients can be doubled or even tripled to make larger family size batches of sunscreen if making larger batches 2-3 drops of pure grapefruit seed extract per batch should be added as a natural preservative.

Mix all ingredients except the caplet, aloe, lavender, and borax in a double boiling pan. Heat the mixture until warm, but not boiling.

In a separate pan mix the remaining ingredients and heat until warm and the powder is dissolved. Once everything is warm, whisk the two batches together until the consistency becomes creamy.

If you are making a large batch you will want to store any excess in an airtight bottle in the refrigerator. While this recipe has not been evaluated by the FDA, or a medical body, most people who try it have found that it works great.
